KINGSTON, R.I. -- The No. 20 Arizona volleyball team claimed the championship of the Rhode Island Invitational this afternoon with a 3-1 (30-19, 22-30, 30-23, 33-31) win over North Carolina. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-1 on the season.
Senior Kim Glass was named tournament MVP after averaging 3.90 kills, 3.20 digs and 1.20 blocks per game over the three matches. Fellow seniors Bre Ladd and Jennifer Abernathy were named to the all-tournament team. Abernathy averaged 3.50 kills, 3.60 digs and 0.50 service aces per game, while Ladd averaged 2.40 kills, 1.30 blocks and 0.60 service aces. She also hit .667 during the tournament.
Abernathy led all players with 19 kills and 21 digs. Glass added 15 kills, 19 digs and five blocks, while Ladd tallied 10 kills and six blocks. Junior Kristina Baum finished with 12 kills and nine digs, just shy of a double-double.
Sophomore Amy Dyck dished out a career-high 56 assists to go along with a career-high 13 digs. She also had seven kills and three blocks.
Arizona opens Pac-10 play next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, with a pair of home matches against Oregon State and Oregon, respectively. Both matches start at 7 p.m. in McKale Center.
