ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The University of Arizona men's golf team shot an opening round 294 (+6) Friday and stands in a tie for ninth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats finished the opening round with a team total of 294 (+6) to tie for ninth place with Augusta State. Arizona is 16 strokes off the pace set by Florida, who leads the 18-team field at 278 (-10). East Tennessee State (284), UNLV (285), Clemson (287) and North Carolina (288) and North Carolina State (288) round out the top five. The stellar field included 17 teams ranked in Golfweek's preseason top 25.
Individually, one Wildcat golfer stands in the top 10 after the first 18 holes. Junior Chris Nallen carded an opening round 70 (-2) and is among six golfers tied for seventh place. The Blairstown, N.J. native was the only Arizona golfer to come in under par. Wake Forest's Bill Haas leads the field of 90 by one stroke after posting a 66 (-6).
Also competing for the Wildcats were senior Reid Hatley and freshman Blaine Peffley, who are both tied for 40th place at 74 (+2), junior Ricky Barnes, who is tied for 56th place at 76 (+4), and junior Andy Connell, who is in 88th place at 84 (+12).
The Carpet Capital Collegiate is being contested at the Farm Golf Club, a par 72, 6,906-yard layout. The 54-hole event runs through Sunday.
