TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team completed the first and second rounds of the Wildcat Invitational on Monday in seventh place.  The 15 field tournament, which includes 12 teams ranked in the top 25, is led by Arizona State, who carded a nine-over par 577 after two rounds.

“The golf course played hard today.  It was kind of surprising that there was only one score under par in first round, because there were so many low scores last year,” Head Coach Greg Allen said.  “In the afternoon, ASU got it going and basically took control of the tournament.”

Amanda Blumenherst from Duke currently leads the field, after carding a three-under par 139 through two rounds.

The Wildcats shot a 305 (+21) in the first round this morning, and carded a 301 (+17) during the second round of play in the afternoon.

“Today was obviously not the kind of day we wanted.  We made silly mistakes and hit the ball places we knew not to hit, which ended up costing us big numbers,” Allen said. “It was nice to see Amanda getting back to playing the way we know she can play.”

Individually, the Wildcats were led by junior Alison Walshe, who is tied for 18th after totaling a seven-over par 149 throughout two rounds.

Junior Mary Jacobs is two strokes behind her teammate, carding a 77 (+6) and 74 (+3) respectively in the first and second rounds.  The Godfrey, Ill., native is currently tied for 30th.

“Individually, our big three never got things going.  Alison lost momentum after starting the second round with a birdie, eagle, and another birdie.  She made a mistake on hole five and ended up shooting 73,” Allen explained.  “Our team kind of goes as those three go, so when they do not play well, we do not play well.  There is a good round in us and hopefully we can get it in tomorrow.”

Sophomore Adriana Zwanck is tied for 33rd after shooting a 152 (+10) on Monday.  Fellow classmate Amanda Wilson is tied for 43rd with a two-round total of 154 (+12).

“I am not going to worry about today.  I understand that we are several shots behind, but we are inevitably building towards April and May,” said Allen.  “Having Amanda back is a step in the right direction.”

Freshman Emily Mason is currently tied for 64th place after carding a 162 (+20) through 36 holes.

Competing as individuals for the Wildcats are freshman Brittany Benvenuto, who is tied for 72nd, and sophomores Marisa Smith and Brooke Schneider, who are currently in 77th and 81st place respectively.

The tournament is being held at Arizona National, which is a par 71, 6,238 yard course.

The final round of the tournament is set to begin with a tee time of 8am (MST) tomorrow.
