 Cats fall to Trojans

LOS ANGELES – Arizona swimming and diving was downed by the USC Trojans today at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium. The No. 16 USC women knocked off the No. 1 ranked Arizona women, 164-136, while the unranked Trojan men prevailed 152-91 over the No. 3 Arizona men. The loss was the first for both Arizona men’s and women’s teams this season.

The 400 yard medley relay led off the afternoon action with both USC ‘A’ team’s topping the field. The women of Troy clocked in at 3:35.52 and men slightly edged out Arizona by four tenths of a second, 3:15.32.

Senior freestyle extraordinaire Lara Jackson won the women’s 50 yard freestyle title for Arizona, turning in a time of 22.47.

Olympian Jake Tapp’s skills were on display in the men’s 200 yard backstroke, as he took the race with a time of 1:46.45.

Freshman Alyssa Anderson continued her prowess in the women’s 1000 yard freestyle, winning the event with a time of 9:44.65. In the 500 yard freestyle, Anderson finished third (4:50.79) behind Katinka Hosszu (4:46.95).

But the men and women of Troy proved too much for the Cats in this early season dual meet.

Olympic Gold Medalist Rebecca Soni won both the women’s 100 yad breaststroke (59.48) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:07.86) and was on the Trojans top 400 medley relay team.

In the men’ 1000 yard freestyle, USC’s Evan Marcus topped Jean Basson with a first place time of 9:18.86.

In the women’s one-meter dive, Arizona freshman Ainsley Oliver won overwhelmingly with a score of 2546.00.

Ben Grado placed second in the men’s three-meter dive with a score of 376.35 to winner Harrison Jones’ 425.17.

To close the day, the women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Justine Schluntz, Lara Jackson, Leone Vorster and Taylor Baughman won the event, posting a time of 3:19.26.

The USC men’s team of Luke Tanner, Buddy Turner, Jake Grosser and Jeff Daniels won the 400 freestyle with a time of 2:58.84.

Tomorrow the Arizona women’s team will travel to Westwood to face UCLA while the men will swim against USC for a second day.
