Event shortened to 36 holes due to rain; Liaw tied for 12th place at 74
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona’s men’s golf team stands in ninth place after Monday’s first round of the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge at Bandon Dunes Golf Course in Bandon, Ore.
Battling heavy rains, Arizona shot a 19-over-par 307 and stands in ninth place. The Wildcats are 16 strokes behind tournament-leader UCLA, who carded a three-over 291. Arizona State (296), USC and Northwestern (298), and Washington (301) rounded out the top-five places in the field of 14.
The weather washed out Monday afternoon’s scheduled second round. The tournament will be shortened to 36 holes with Tuesday’s round scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m. PDT.
Sophomore Henry Liaw led Arizona with a two-over 74. The Rowland Heights, Calif., product is tied for 12th place in the field of 70, four strokes behind Northwestern’s Bryson Young, who carded a two-under-par 70.
Teammate Travis Esway shot a five-over 77 Monday and stands in a tie for 31st place. Senior Nathan Lashley and sophomore Nathan Tyler each shot a six-over 78 and are tied for 43rd place. Also competing for the Wildcats was senior Nick Juszczak, who is tied for 57th place after carding a eight-over 80.
The Bandon Dunes Golf Course is a par 72, 7,040-yard layout.
