The Arizona women's tennis team (10-5, 1-2 Pac 10) defeated No. 39 Sacramento State (12-6, 5-0 BSC) 5-2 Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

The Wildcats got off to a strong start in doubles, winning two of three matches. In the No. 2 spot, senior Danielle Steinberg and freshman Sarah Landsman defeated Sacramento's Clarisse Baca and Joyce Martinez 8-2.

Clinching the doubles point for the Cats in the No. 3 position were junior Ariane Masschelein and sophomore Jane Huh, who defeated Maria Meliuk and Aileen Tsan.

"I'm very pleased with today's effort in doubles, especially our No. 3 team." Said head coach Vicky Maes, "They're finally starting to work together on both sides, and are getting a lot better at closing close matches."

In singles, Sarah Landsman registered the first win of the day, defeating Melissa Valenzuela 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot.

Next to win for the Wildcats was fellow freshman Natasha Marks, who came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to defeat Maria Meliuk 6-2, 6-4.

In the No. 5 spot, Jane Huh fell to Clarisse Baca 6-2, 6-4, while junior Claire Rietsch, playing in the No. 6 position, lost to Joyce Martinez 6-1, 6-3.

Clinching the match for the Wildcats was Ariane Masschelein, who defeated Luba Schifris in the No. 4 spot 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The last match of the day to finish was in the No. 1 position where Danielle Steinberg defeated Katrina Zheltova 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.

"Our singles effort was good today as well." Maes continued, "Positions 2 and 3 went down rather quickly while 1 and 4 took some more time to close. Ariane did a great job coming out strong in the third set. Dani did great as well, despite being exhausted going into the last set. I'm very happy with today's win."

Up next, the Wildcats resume their conference play in Bay Area against Stanford and Cal on April 3 and 4. The match against Stanford will start at 1:30 p.m. and the match against Cal will start at noon.
