The Arizona soccer team (7-4) goes on the road for the sixth time this season, facing Arizona State Friday, Oct. 10 in Tempe, Ariz. The Wildcats and Sun Devils play at 7:00 p.m. at the Soccer Stadium for both team’s first conference game of the season. Arizona will be looking to beat Arizona State for the first time in program history.
Scouting the Opposition:
Arizona State- The Sun Devils (6-2-3) have not lost a game since falling to TCU on Sept. 5. Since then, the Sun Devils are 5-0-2. Sophomore forward Karin Volpe leads the team with six goals. The Sun Devils are coming off a bye weekend. ASU won its last game by defeating Long Beach State 1-0 on Sept. 28. Arizona lost to Long Beach 2-0 two days earlier.
Last Sunday: Arizona @ Santa Clara (UA 2, SCU 0)
In Arizona’s final non-conference game of the season they defeated the Broncos 2-0. The Wildcats got off to a quick start when JASMINE NAMDAR scored a goal in the first minute of the game. Later in the 87th minute, LEILA AMINI sealed the victory putting in her second goal of the season. Chelsea McIntyre had her fifth shutout of the season.
In the Net- Redshirt junior Chelsea McIntyre is one of the reasons the Wildcats have already surpassed last year’s win total. Through 11 games, McIntyre has 50 saves and five shutouts.
Goals- Last season the Wildcats had trouble putting the ball in the net. They averaged 1.07 goals/game. This year is a different story. With more playmakers in the lineup, Arizona has found the back of the net 17 times, averaging 1.55 goals/game this season.
Sensational Freshman- Freshman RENAE CUELLAR leads the Wildcats in goals and points through 11 games. Cuellar has started nine of the ten games she has played in, scoring five goals and assisting in another one. She also scored the game winning goal against Cal State Northridge in double overtime on Sept. 21.
The Wildcats have tied the programs record for the number of overtime victories with two. They have achieved this feat three other times (2000, 2006, 2007). Arizona is one game away from tying the most overtime games in a season. They have played six overtime games in 2000, 2005 and 2006.
Currently the Wildcats are ranked 8th in the west region according to soccerbuzz.com. However, after a win over Santa Clara, that was still not enough for the Wildcats to crack the NSCAA/adidas West Regional Rankings. They are still receiving votes.
Dan Tobias, the winningest coach at Arizona, continues to add to his numbers. With six victories this season Tobias now has 53 wins at Arizona and 97 for his career. His record at Arizona is 53-52-8 and his career record is 97-97-14.
