Next Up for the Cats

The No. 2 Arizona softball team (37-3, 6-0) will host two of the best teams in the Pac-10 this weekend. On Friday, April 11 the Cats will take on No. 11 Stanford (28-14, 2-4) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m., Arizona will play No. 6 California (32-9, 4-2), a rematch of the 2002 College World Series title game. The Cats are scheduled to play California again on Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m.

Road Trip

The Cats ended one of the toughest road trips this season with a 3-0 record. On Friday, April 4, the Cats traveled to Seattle, Washington to take on No. 3 Washington. Freshman Alicia Hollowell struck out 12 batters to lead the Cats to a 3-0 victory. Hollowell had her sixth one-hitter this season against No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, April 5. Arizona won 3-0. Senior Lovie Jung hit her fifth grand slam this season to help the Cats to a 5-1 win over UCLA on Sunday, April 6. Arizona is currently 6-0 in Pac-10 games.

 
 

Pac-10 Player of the Week

Senior Lovie Jung was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for March 24-March 30. During that week, Jung posted a .750 batting average with five runs, six hits, two runs and three RBI. Jung currently has a .442 batting average with 44 runs, 50 hits, 15 doubles, 20 home runs and 59 RBI. Jung has hit five grand slams this season, including one on Sunday, April 5 against No. 1 UCLA. This was the second Pac-10 weekly award for Jung. She was named Pac-10 Player of the week for Feb. 3-9.

In the Circle

Freshman Alicia Hollowell ended her second Pac-10 weekend with a 3-0 record. She currently holds a perfect 6-0 record in Pac-10 games. Over the weekend, Hollowell had a 0.33 ERA with two shutout performances. She pitched 21 innings and struck out 18 batters. In all Pac-10 games, Hollowell has a 0.36 ERA with four shutouts. She's pitched 39 innings and has struck out 37 batters. Opposing batters have a 0.94 batting average against her. On the season, Hollowell holds a 24-2 record with a 0.33 ERA. Hollowell has pitched 168 innings and has struck out 236 batters. Hollowell has had three no-hitters and nine double-digit strikeout performances.

Pac-10 Games

Arizona currently has a 6-0 record in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. The team currently has a .280 batting average. Senior Lovie Jung has a .533 batting average in Pac-10 games with seven runs, eight hits and three home runs. Freshman Autumn Champion has a .391 batting average in Pac-10 games with five runs and nine hits.

The Rankings

Arizona is ranked No. 2 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. The Cats are also ranked No. 2 in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll. Arizona is sure to move up in the polls once they are released for this week. The ESPN.com poll began on Feb. 25 and is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches and by selected media members. The ESPN.com poll comes out again on April 7, and the USA Today poll comes out on Wednesday, April 9. UCLA is ranked No. 1 in both polls.

The Coach

Arizona's Mike Candrea carries a career record of 963-187 (.837), accomplished in 17 years with the Wildcats. The 2002 Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year has led UA to six national titles and six Pacific-10 Conference championships. Last season, he became only the third Division I coach in history to win 900 games. He's on his way to become only the second coach to win 1,000 games. During his tenure, Wildcat student-athletes have won the Honda Softball Award fives times (Susie Parra-1994, Jenny Dalton-1996, Nancy Evans-1998, Jennie Finch-2001, 2002). Candrea's Arizona teams have played in 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 15 consecutive College World Series. Last season, Candrea's team made it to the College World Series Championship game before losing to California, 6-0. Candrea is joined by assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Larry Ray.

Hillenbrand Stadium

UA carries a record of 325-20 in Hillenbrand Stadium. Arizona had a total crowd of 2,560 for the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Cats had an average attendance of 1,755 and drew in a total of 49,140 in 2002. Arizona set an attendance record of 3,161 fans on April 9, 2002 against UCLA. Arizona had a three-season 70-game home winning streak snapped by UCLA on April 7, 2002.
