This Week

On Friday, the Arizona womenˇ?s soccer team (4-4-0) will take on the Creighton Bluejays (6-5-1) at 7 p.m.??On Sunday, the Wildcats will host the San Diego State Aztecs (3-3-1) at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium, located at 15th St. and Plumer Ave.??The games are part of the Four Points by Sheraton Tucson University Plaza Wildcat Classic.? Both Creighton and San Diego State will play at Arizona State in their other game this weekend.

Last Week Recap

Over the weekend the Wildcats dropped a pair of 1-0 contests. On Friday, the Cats lost to Virginia Tech.? Arizona had an opportunity to score when freshman Jasmin Day went one-on-one with the VT goalkeeper, Ashley Owens, but Owens made the save.? The score remained 0-0 through the first 81 minutes of the game, but at the 82:39 mark Hokie freshman midfielder Meghan Flesch put a shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle Nicolai.? ˇ?We did everything right tonight, but score,ˇ± head coach Dan Tobias said.? ˇ?Give Virginia Tech credit, they made it difficult for us to get a rhythm.? You hate to learn lessons in a loss but we learned some valuable lessons tonight that will help us down the road.ˇ±

On Sunday, Arizona lost another heartbreaker, this time in double-overtime to No. 2 Santa Clara.? Arizona had opportunities to score, with time running down at the end of regulation; Arizona got the ball into the Broncoˇ?s goal box.? Seconds after time expired Arizona sophomore forward Laura Huylebroeck put the ball in the net.? The Cats and Broncos played a scoreless 10 minute overtime period.? Less than two minutes into the second overtime the Broncos ended the game on a goal by Brittany Klein.? The goal came off a free kick following an Arizona foul, Klein was assisted by Lexi Orand and Tina Estrada.? ˇ?You are never going to keep a good team scoreless for 102 minutes,ˇ± head coach Dan Tobias said.? ˇ?It would have been another good win, had we got it, over a top-five team before the start of conference.?? Now we have to just rest and recover and get ready for next weeks games.ˇ±

Coach Dan Tobias

Arizona head coach Dan Tobias is in his fifth season at Arizona.??In 2003, Tobias took over a program that in its nine previous seasons had never had a winning record, and soon he had the Wildcats as contenders in both the Pac-10 and national championship picture.??Tobias carries a 44-39-7 overall record with the Wildcats.? He has earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors twice, in 2002, with Washington State and 2004, with Arizona, as well as National Coach of the Year in 2004 by Soccer America.? In 2004 Tobias also received West Region Coach of the Year by Soccer Buzz and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year honors as well.? In 2004 Tobias led UA to its first Pac-10 title and followed that with a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2005.


About the Bluejays

Head coach Bruce Erickson is in his ninth season with the Bluejays and has a school-record 81 victories.? The 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, has won one regular season MVC-title, three MVC-tournament titles, and has been to the NCAA tournament three times in the last five years.? Erickson and the Jays finished the 2006 campaign with an overall record of 9-8-2 (3-2-1) and finished second in the MVC.? The Bluejays returned top goal scorer from last year senior forward Toch Ihemelu, five.? Ihemelu has one goal this year.? In 2007, the Jays top scorers are junior forward Marcy Gans with four and freshman midfielder Emily Orbell with three.? Junior goalkeeper Kristen Casey has recorded 26 saves on the year and is allowing an average of one goal per game.? The only common opponent between the Cats and Jays is Arizona State, who Creighton will play Sunday afternoon.? The Bluejays are currently 6-5-1 overall on the year.? This is the first meeting between Creighton and Arizona since 1997, the Cats hold a 2-0-0 all-time record.

About the Aztecs

Head coach Mike Friesen is in his first season as head coach of the San Diego State Aztecs.? Prior to becoming head coach Friesen spent three years on the coaching staff, including two of them as associate head coach.? Last year the Aztecs went 6-11-3 (2-3-2 Mountain West Conference) and were eliminated in the first round of the MWC tournament to TCU in penalty kicks.? The Aztecs lost their leading scorer from last year, as well as the number one goalkeeper.? Their leading scorer this year is senior forward Jackie Ragados with three goals.? Like UA, the Aztecs start a freshman in the net, Aubree Southwick.? Southwick has given up .54 goals per game and has 45 saves.? The Aztecs and Wildcats have eight common opponents.? So far this year the Aztecs are 2-1 against shared opponents, with wins over Creighton, 2-0, Cal Poly SLO, 1-0, and a 2-0 loss to California.? Still to come the Aztecs will face Arizona State, Thursday night, UCLA, BYU, New Mexico, and Utah.? San Diego State is currently 3-3-2.? This is the first meeting between San Diego State and Arizona since 1995; the Aztecs lead the all-time series 2-0-0.

The Cats are 1-2 against ranked opponents this season.? They have defeated No. 4 Texas, 2-0, and lost to No. 10 Virginia, 4-0, and No. 2 Santa Clara, 1-0 in double-overtime.? Prior to the victory over No. 4 Texas on Sept. 9, the last time the Wildcats won a game against a ranked opponent was 2005, when the Cats defeated No. 25 Utah and No. 21 Stanford.? This was the same year the Cats advanced to the Sweet 16.? The last time the Wildcats defeated an opponent ranked as high as the fourth-ranked Longhorns was Oct. 8, 2004 when the Cats beat No. 4 Washington; the same year the Cat won the Pac-10 title.? Also in 2004 the Wildcats defeated No. 5 UCLA.

Leading the Pac

Jasmin Day ranks sixth in the conference with goals with three and total points with seven.? Samantha Drees ranks fifth in the conference with three assist and ninth in assists per game with .38 assists per.? Danielle Nicolai is second in the Pac-10 in saves with 32 on the season and third in saves per game with four per.? She is in the top-10 of every save category for the conference.? Arizona is also third the conference for attendance with an average of 732 per game.
