TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 7 University of Arizona women's swimming and diving team will take 11 swimmers and possibly two divers to the NCAA Championships next week in Austin, Texas. The three-day meet will run from March 17-19.
The 11 swimmers for Arizona are: Alyssa Anderson, Ellyn Baumgardner, Dana Christ, Sarah Denninghoff, Monica Drake, Grace Finnegan, Kait Flederbach, Margo Geer, Aubrey Peacock, Hannah Ross and Chelsey Salli. The Cats will also have the opportunity for divers, including Samantha Pickens and Ainsley Oliver, to qualify through the Zone E qualification meet this week.
The Wildcat NCAA lineup is one of Frank Busch's youngest ever as eight out of the 11 swimmers are underclassmen including five true freshmen. Two weeks ago at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., Arizona even used an all-freshman lineup on its 200 freestyle relay.
Zone E diving trials, also in Austin, Texas for both men and women, begin Thursday, March 10 and run through Saturday, March 12.
The women's NCAA team will depart Tucson next Monday in preparation for the championships. Arizona currently owns the longest active streak in the country with seven consecutive top-four finishes. Last season in West Lafayette, Ind., the women won one individual title and two relay national championships in route to a fourth-place national finish with 359.5 points.
