Tucson, Ariz. (Oct. 31) - Despite out-shooting Oregon State, 20-6, for the contest, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was edged by the Beavers, 2-1, at home on Friday night. The Wildcats are 5-9-2 overall and 1-4-1 in Pac-10 play, while Oregon State goes to 7-8-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Pac-10 action.
The Wildcats jumped on the Beavers right from the start, getting off four solid shots in the first 14 minutes of play. Oregon State had only two shots in the first half, but the Beavers capitalized on their second shot, when Brianna Monka scored off an assist by Liz Money at 15:48.
The Cats took nine more shots in the first half and didn't allow OSU another shot during the period, but Arizona was unable to dent the net. The Beavers led, 1-0, at the half, although Arizona had a 13-2 advantage in shots for the period.
Arizona tied the game with its second shot of the second half. At 55:38, sophomore midfielder Lisa Kosena passed the ball off to freshman forward Lauren Winters, who knotted the game with her second goal of the season.
The two teams traded shots for the next 15 minutes, then OSU's Lindsey Beem sent a through ball to Tessa Baker, who got behind the Arizona defense and scored the game-winner in the 71st minute. Arizona out-shot Oregon State, 3-1, over the final 19 minutes of the match but wasn't able to convert.
Arizona ended the game with a 10-5 edge in shots on-goal. Sophomore midfielder Mallory Miller finished with a game-high seven shots, including four on-goal, for the Cats. Kosena contributed four shots of her own, while fellow sophomore Kelly Nelson tallied three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Juarez played the full 90 minutes in-goal, logging three saves.
The Wildcats play their final home game of the season against Oregon on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. Arizona will wrap up the 2003 season in Washington next weekend.
