TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men’s swimming and diving team will begin its 2008-09 season ranked as the No. 3 team in the nation. The Wildcats, who received 227 total votes and one first place vote, have the daunting task of replacing two individual national champions.
“We graduated some tremendous talent last season,” said Arizona head coach Frank Busch. “The talent of this year’s men’s team will be in our sophomore and junior classes and its nice to be thought of highly in terms of rankings.”
The men won their first ever swimming and diving national championship when they topped Auburn and California during the 2008 finals held in Federal Way, Wash.
The rankings, which are run by the CollegeSwimming.com website, feature Texas and Stanford ranked just ahead of Arizona and will battle the Wildcats in scheduled dual meets this season.
“We’ll face a very tough schedule this year,” added Busch. “Through the tough competition we’ll look to grow as a team.”
The Cats open defense of its 2008 crown when they host Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at the newly remodeled Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
