Arizona Men's Tennis Player Falls in Quarterfinals of Pac-10 Championships
Ojai, Calif. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team (9-12) completed the second day of the Pac-10 Championships held in Ojai, Calif., on Friday. The Wildcats competed in the main draw quarterfinals, round of 16 and quarterfinals doubles competition, invitational singles and doubles play. All matches were postponed due to early morning rain in Ojai, Calif.
Sophomore Whi Kim, playing in the quarterfinals of the main draw, fell to Rodrigo Grilli of UCLA in a tough three-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In main draw doubles action, Kim and partner sophomore Roeland Brateanu lost to Marcin Matkowski and Julien Rojer of UCLA in the round of 16, 8-4. In other main draw doubles competition, senior Steven Capriati and sophomore Carl Hagman topped the team of Ari Strasberg and Alex Vlaski of Washington, 9-7, to advance to the quarterfinals. Then they were defeated by the team of Scott Lipsky and David Martin of UCLA, 8-4. In invitational doubles action, junior Tom Lloyd and freshman Colin O'Grady advance to the semifinals tomorrow; they beat Joseph Kao and Philip Sheng of Stanford, 8-1, in the quarterfinals today after a bye in the round of 16.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, April 27 for continuing main draw doubles, invitational and consolation singles and doubles action.
