PALO ALTO, Calif. -
Stanford’s No. 6 women’s tennis team (13-0, 6-0) defeated No. 28 Arizona (12-6, 2-3) by a score of 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in a rain-shortened conference match at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Due to the threat of rain, the singles competition was played first, eliminating doubles play completely.
The Wildcats battled in singles play, but Stanford took the first four matches. No. 4 Mallory Burdette defeated senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) at the No. 2 spot, No. 45 Stacey Tan beat sophomore Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) at No. 3, Veronica Li defeated sophomore Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) at No. 4 and No. 3 Nicole Gibbs sealed the match with her victory over sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) at No. 1.
The remaining singles matches were not played due to rain.
“The team showed once again that we can hang with the top programs,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “I really felt that, with a little more confidence in the big moments, we could have made it a lot closer and put some needed wins on the board. Our girls are starting to see it too, so our goal for next weekend is to keep creating the opportunities, but then also closing on the big points.”
The Wildcats will look to bounce back with another pair of road matches next weekend when they take on No. 4 USC on Friday, April 6 at 1:30 p.m. and No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, April 7 at noon.
