Wildcat Randi Liljenquist Wins Share of Floor Title

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team fell to fourth-ranked Utah, 193.925-196.400, Friday night, in front of a crowd of 708, in McKale Center. Arizona set a season-high 48.825 on beam, and the Wildcats posted their top overall team score (193.925) for the season. Arizona dropped to 2-8 on the year, while Utah improved to 3-1 overall.

Arizona (2-8, 0-2 Pac-10) trailed Utah for the entire meet and entered the final rotation on floor behind Utah by a score of 144.900-146.850. UA scored a 49.025 on floor, but the Wildcats could not overcome the deficit. The Utes' Shannon Bowles scored a perfect 10.000 on beam in the final rotation to seal the win for Utah. Six Arizona gymnasts - Nikki Beyschau, Lindsay Compitello, Kara Fry, Sheehan Lemley, Randi Liljenquist and Andi McCabe - set or tied season-high and career-high marks in tonight's meet.

Utah, who won each of the four team events, swept the top individual event honors on vault (Veronique Leclerc - 9.875), bars (Theresa Kulikowski - 9.900), beam (Shannon Bowles - 10.000) and in the all-around (Deidra Graham - 39.325). Arizona's Randi Liljenquist and Utah's Deidra Graham shared top honors on floor (9.900).

Individually for the Wildcats, junior Randi Liljenquist was Arizona's top finisher in the all-around, ending the meet in second place after setting a new season-high 39.225. Liljenquist tied for top honors on floor, as she tied a season-high 9.900. She landed in second place on vault (9.725) and tied for fourth on bars with a new season-high 9.800 in the event.

Senior Kara Fry tied for fourth place on beam and tied a season-high 9.850 for the third consecutive meet. Fry also finished fourth in the all-around with a 38.425. Sophomore Nikki Beyschau finished fifth on vault (9.675) and posted a sixth-place finish on bars (9.750). Beyschau also scored a season-high 9.775 in the floor event. Senior Mary Reiss tied for fourth place on floor with a 9.850.

Junior Lindsay Compitello set a career-high 9.475 on bars and posted a career-high 9.750 on beam. Freshman Sheehan Lemley tied a career-high 9.725 on beam, while fellow freshman Andi McCabe set a career-high 9.750 on floor.

"Tonight's meet was a very big step for us because we did not have to count a fall in any event. What killed us on vault and bars was that we didn't stick our landings, and that is what the judges were looking for. I had hoped we would score a little better, but this is a very young team with a lot of potential. We just have to get back in the gym and work on sticking our landings," said Arizona head coach Bill Ryden.

Arizona closes out its two-meet homestand next week, when the Wildcats square off against the No. 14 Oregon State Beavers and the No. 21 Denver Pioneers on Friday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. MST, in McKale Center.
