TEMPE - Arizona State guard Dymond Simon scored a game-high 19 points to go along with six assists as the Sun Devils downed Arizona, 75-38, Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
For the second-straight game, Arizona set a season-low for points scored in a half. The Cats shot just 6-of-28 (.214) in the first half as they trailed 29-12 at the break. They also matched their season-low point total for a game, set just one week ago against UCLA.
Arizona State jumped out to a 10-0 lead while the Wildcats missed their first seven field goal attempts and committed six turnovers. The Sun Devils did not exactly scorch the nets early on at a 4-for-12 clip, but their defensive pressure kept the Wildcats from running any offensive sets.
Reiko Thomas made her return to the lineup seven minutes into the game after missing the UCLA game with an ankle injury. She promptly converted her first field goal attempt to get the Cats on the board.
The basket seemed to spark the Wildcat defense to life as Ibekwe followed with a pair of steals, the first of which was converted into a lay-up by Sarah Hays to give Arizona some life. Ibekwe then hit a jumper on the wing to make it 10-6. The surge did not last long, however, as the Sun Devils hit a pair of threes along with two short jumpers by Sybil Dosty for a 10-0 run.
The second half started much the way the first half played out. The Sun Devils scored nine points over the first two minutes of play while the Cats committed a pair of early turnovers and never recovered.
The Wildcats finished the game shooting 14-of-52 from the field (.269) and committed 26 turnovers, their highest total since giving the ball away 29 times against Texas A&M back in November.
One bright spot for the Wildcats was on the glass, as they lost the battle of the glass by just one, 42-41, despite a considerable size disadvantage.
Briann January tossed in 16 points and dished out seven assists for Arizona State (13-6, 5-2), which has now won five-straight and seven in a row over the Wildcats. Sybil Dosty tallied the only double-double of the day, notching 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Ibekwe led the Wildcats with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Ashley Frazier tossed in 9 points and added 3 steals while Thomas chipped in 7 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.
Arizona (7-11, 0-7) continues its three-game road trip on Thursday, January 29 with a visit to Washington at 7 p.m.
