Arizona Women's Golf in first place after second day of competition

OPELIKA, Ala. - The University of Arizona women's golf team sits atop the leader board at the NCAA Fall Preview after action on Saturday. Arizona, competing at Grand National Lake Course, shot a 4-over-par 292 to top yesterday's leaders Auburn and Duke. Auburn stroked a 9-over-par 297 while Duke kept close behind shooting 10-over-par 298.

Arizona Sophomore Cassandra Kirkland is leading competition after scoring an even-par 72. Overall at the tournament Kirkland has stroked 4-under-par 141. After play on Friday Kirkland was tied for second with Auburn's Nicole Hage who dropped to a sixth place tie after shooting a 4-over-par 76.

Kirkland leads teammate and golf pre-season All-American Erica Blasberg. Blasberg, a sophomore, shot a 2-under-par 70 on her second day of competition. Blasberg was tied yesterday for seventh place. As of Saturday in the tournament Blasberg's overall scoring, has placed her in second, shows her shooting 3-under-par 141.

Whitney Welch, a sophomore, advance up the leader board today to a tie at 28th place by posting 2-over-par 76. Welch was tied at 40th after her first day of competition. Sophomore Lani Elton is tied for 33th place with four other golfers after shooting 5-over-par 77 during round two of competition. Arizona junior Mar Garcia is tied for 44th place with Rachel Kyono of Pepperdine after posting 4-over-par 76.

The Wildcats finish competition on Sunday morning with a tee time of 9:30 a.m. EST.
