 Wildcat freshman to compete for the European team


TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men’s golfer Pedro Oriol has been selected to play in the 2007 Palmer Cup, presented by Monster, it was announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.


Oriol, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, will represent Europe in the annual Ryder Cup-style matches between U.S. collegiate golfers and those from Europe.  The 11th edition of the Palmer Cup will take place June 7-8 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.  The U.S. leads the series 5-4-1.


Oriol has a 73.59 stroke average through 29 rounds played in 2006-07 with two top-10 and two top-20 finishes to his credit.  Ten of those 29 rounds have been played at par or better with a low round of 68.  In those 10 tournament appearances, 82.8 percent (24-of-29) of his rounds have counted towards the team total.


His low tournament of the season was a two-under 214, April 13-15, at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, while his best finish, a fourth-place effort, came Feb. 26-27 at the Anteater Invitational.


Oriol will be joined on the European team by Jonas Blixt of Florida State, Jorge Campillo of Indiana, Rhys Davies and Gareth Shaw of East Tennessee State, Oscar Floren of Texas Tech, Mark Haastrup of Georgia State and Gordon Yates of Stirling.  Chris van der Velde of The Netherlands will coach the European squad.


Oriol and his Arizona teammates will next be in action, April 23-25, at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships in Eugene, Ore.
