Swimmers Named to Academic All-District Team

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona swimmers junior Whitney Myers and senior Simon Burnett have been named to the Academic All-District VIII At-Large Team for their excellence in academics and athletics.

 

Myers received first team honors, advancing her to the national ballot for a chance to be an Academic All-American, while Burnett grabbed second team honors to close out his four-year tenure with the Wildcats.

 

Myers, a native of Oxford Ohio, has a 3.82 grade-point average throughout three years at Arizona, majoring in science education. She was also named the 2006 Pac-10 Women’s Swimmer of the Year and was a finalist for the 2005-2006 Swimming and Diving Honda Sports Award to determine the top woman collegiate athlete in that sport.

 

Myers is the 2006 Pac-10 champion in the 400-yard individual medley and a two-time NCAA champion in the 200 and 400 IM. She was also a member of Arizona's 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 3:12.77, setting U.S. Open, NCAA, pool and school records at the meet. She also contributed to the Wildcats’ win in the 400-yard medley relay that finished in 3:31.70.

 

Burnett, a Tetsworth, U.K. native, accumulated a 3.21 GPA throughout his four years at Arizona with a major in business economics. He was named the 2006 Pac-10 Men’s Swimmer of the Year and defended his 200-freestyle crown at the 2006 NCAA Championships, while breaking his own NCAA and school records with a time of 1:31.20. Burnett also contributed to Wildcat victories in three relay events.

 

The 10-member men’s and women’s Academic All-District Teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VIII is comprised of the states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.

 

The at-large team consists of athletes in the sports of swimming and diving, gymnastics, tennis, golf, water polo, field hockey, skiing, bowling and crew.
