MALIBU, Calif. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s tennis team began play today at the ITA West Regional Tennis Championships on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.
In first round action, Ravid Hazi took on Nik Von Derahe of LMU and won convincingly; 6-0, 6-1. Then Peter Zimmer went up against UCIˇ?s Douglas Taylor and won; 6-2, 6-1.
For the teamˇ?s third match of the day, Jay Goldman played Dean Jackson from San Diego and lost; 6-4, 6-4. After Goldmanˇ?s defeat, fellow freshman David Humphreys took on UCSBˇ?s Nigel Barton and was victorious; 7-6, 7-6.
Bruno Alcala was set to square up against Kelvin Kim of UCLA, but Kim was forced to withdraw due to injury and Alcala advanced to the second round. Closing out the dayˇ?s action Nate Cochrane fell to Matan Shitrit of SDSU; 6-1, 7-5.
"Iˇ?m pleased with what I saw today, but I also see some areas that could use some improvement," said Head Coach Tad Berkowitz. "Iˇ?m excited to see how they come out and compete tomorrow."
With the fall schedule winding down, the Wildcats are looking forward to these tough matches against many Pac-10 opponents.
The team as a whole finished the day with a record of 4-2.
In tomorrowˇ?s action, Claudio Christen, fresh from his doubles title win with Alcala at the Racquet Club Invitational, will take on Dmitry Popov of LMU. Alcala will due battle against James Lemke of LMU. Hazi will face Gary Sacks of USC, Zimmer will play Mathieu Dehaine from UCLA, and Humphreys will see Jaak Poldma of USC in the second round.
