In the main draw of the competition, the Wildcats top four players had an up and down day. Beginning action on the day, Bruno Alcala was able to bounce back after dropping the first set 4-6 against Southern California’s Adam Loucks to win the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-1. Loucks had won the players’ previous match up earlier in the season. No. 52 Roger Matalonga fell in the first round to UCLA’s No. 102 Mathieu Dehaine, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Claudio Christen lost his match up with Washington’s Daniel Chu, falling in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Groslimond finished the first round for the Wildcats with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Arizona State’s Nick Hegarty.
In the second round, Alcala fell to Stanford’s 15th-ranked Matt Bruch, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Groslimond advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jean-Noel Insausti.
In the first round of invitational play, Peter Zimmer received a first round bye. Nathan Cochrane, who had not competed since the fall season, defeated
In the second round of the invitational, both Wildcats fell. Zimmer lost to UCLA’s Jeremy Drean, 6-3, 6-3. Stanford’s Phil Kao defeated Cochrane, 6-4, 6-4.
The Wildcats will hit the courts again tomorrow, Friday, April 27, Groslimond will continue in singles play as well as three Arizona pairs will begin the doubles portion of the competition.
