TUCSON, Ariz. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s golf junior varsity team shot a 287 Thursday and is in ninth place after one round at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

The Arizona junior varsityˇ?s seven-over 287 put the Wildcats in ninth place after the first 18 holes. Colorado State leads the field with a four-under 276, just ahead of UC Irvine (281), San Jose State (281), Houston (282), Texas-San Antonio (283) and Saint Maryˇ?s (283) filled out the top five places.

A pair of freshmen led the way for the Wildcats today, as Jonathan Khan and Roberto Galletti both notched one-over 71 tallies in the opening round and are tied for 19th place. Teammates Mark Lamb and Nicholas Park were one and two strokes behind respectively. Lamb was tied for 25th place at two-over 72, while Park was tied for 35th place at three-over 73.

UC Irvineˇ?s John Chin, San Jose Stateˇ?s Peter Gibbs and Texas-San Antonioˇ?s Shane Costelloe were atop the leader board at three-under 67.

UA freshman Tom Conran was in 70th place at 10-over 80.

The Del Walker Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow at Virginia Country Club, a par 70, 6,633-yard layout.
