TUCSON--Arizona used two long balls to generate enough offense and Jenny Gladding scattered three hits to help the Wildcats beat Louisville, 6-2, in UA's first game of its Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic.
Leneah Manuma hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning over a 40-foot parapet wall on Gittings Gym some 40 beyond the fence in right-center field, about 250 feet from home plate, to give UA (8-2) a 3-0 lead. Lovie Jung opened the game with a double and Mackenzie Vandergeest walked with one out to set up Manuma's blast.
Melissa Jacobo hit a two-out two-run home run off UA's Jenny Gladding (3-2) in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead. It was Jacobo's second homer on the day and the fifth Gladding had surrendered in her last three appearances.
Courtney Fossatti singled in a run with an opposite-field slap single in the second and Jennie Finch hit a solo home run in the third to extend UA's lead to 5-2. Crystal Farley and AllysonVon Liechtenstein opened the sixth with singles and Farley later scored on Jung's single down the left-field line to complete UA's scoring.
The Cats managed nine hits off Louisville (1-5) pitcher Krystle Herold, whose record dropped to 0-3.
