Arizona Women's Tennis Senior Natasha Marks -

Hey Wildcat Fans!

U of A women’s tennis sweeps Colorado and No. 43 Utah!

So this weekend we took on the two newcomers to the Pac-12, unranked Colorado and No. 43 Utah. These matches were must-wins if we wanted to guarantee our spot in the NCAA’s later on in May.

Colorado was first up and we knew the weather was going to be bad all weekend. It was really windy as we went out on court and it only got stronger as the match went on.

Doubles was over quickly as we swept Colorado on all three courts. Singles followed the same pattern with “Mighty Mouse” (Lacey Smyth) defeating her opponent first on court one and then the rest of the team followed. We were really happy with the win as we played smart and efficient tennis, but our main focus shifted to the upcoming match against Utah.

Coach Vicky warned us that there was a 20 percent chance of rain in the morning and that our match time might get pushed back. It did rain… and we got a message to come to the courts 30 minutes later, where the coaches and managers were ‘squeegeeing’ the courts so they would be dry enough to play on.

But the weather held up and we went on for doubles at our scheduled time. Doubles was tougher than Friday as we came out a little flat and Utah played some really aggressive matches.

Winning two out of three matches, we got the very important point, which gave us advantage going into singles. We knew this team was going to fight as they beat ASU 5-2 the previous day and knew we had to start strong, lift our intensity and create some atmosphere for ourselves. I was really proud of the team as we really lifted our level and took a point on every court and won 7-0.

This was our second 7-0 victory of the weekend and it felt so good to keep the undefeated record at home at 12-0.

Now that these two matches are over, we can really focus on the REALLY big upcoming match against ASU and SENIOR DAY.

On Friday, April 20, it is SENIOR DAY for Sarah Landsman and Debora Castany and me. In my opinion, this is the most anticipated match of the year.

I am so excited to play ASU on home ground and have the opportunity to keep the undefeated winning streak at home, which I don’t think has been done in Arizona history. THIS IS A HUGE MATCH. I can’t believe that senior day is right round the corner.

COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR UOFA WOMENS TENNIS TEAM FOR SENIOR DAY AT 1 P.M. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 20TH AT THE ROBSON TENNIS CENTER.
