MALIBU, Calif. ?- It was a busy day for the University of Arizona men’s tennis team at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships. The Wildcats had five singles players entered in the tournament’s main draw and three doubles teams. At the conclusion of day one, two singles players and one doubles team advanced.

Competing in the first singles match of the day for the Wildcats was freshman Alex Labrosse. Playing against Philip Therp, a freshman from UCSB, Labrosse was unable to come away with a victory, losing the match 6-2, 6-4.

Bruno Alcala was next to take the court for Arizona, in a match against the fourth-seeded Chris Groh, a junior at San Diego State University. The first set was close, but in the end Alcala was unable to pull off the upset, losing the match 6-4, 6-2.

Coming off a strong performance last week in Midland, Texas where he upset the tournament’s number one seed, ninth-seeded junior Claudio Christen was set to face off against San Diego State’s Billy Timu. Christen won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Tomorrow Christen will play UCI's Shimpei Suzuki at 1 p.m.

In a tightly contested match, junior Francois VanderMerwe competed against Mattt Ozurovich of USD. After dropping the first set 6-3, VanderMerwe battled back to win the second. In the decisive third set, Ozurovich came away with the victory 6-3.

Capturing the only other singles win for the Wildcats was sophomore Peter Zimmer. Zimmer defeated USC’s Jarryd Cooper in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Heading into doubles play, Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz knew his team would be challenged.

“We got some difficult draws, especially in the doubles, but it’s a good opportunity for the guys to gain some experience against top-level competition,” said Berkowitz.

The team of Labrosse and Zimmer experienced that top level of play first hand as they fell to the number one seeded team of Omar Altmann and Andre Begemann from Pepperdine 8-2.

The matches did not get any easier for the Wildcats as Labrosse and VanderMerwe were eliminated by the second-seeded team from UCLA 8-2.

The lone doubles win for Arizona came from the duo of Alcala and Christen as they advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-5 victory over T.J. Bellama and Juan Carlos Rebaza of ASU.

The singles and doubles champions from the tournament will be granted entrance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held at Ohio State University.
