COLUMBUS-Ohio ?- The Arizona women’s golf team shot a 297 (+9) in the third round of the NCAA National Championships, and jumped into 17th place heading into the final round of the tournament hosted by Ohio State University. Arizona's round three score was 22 strokes better than in round two.

“Things went a lot better out there for us today,” head coach Greg Allen said.  “It was good to see the way we bounced back from our disastrous round yesterday. It really said a lot about the character of these girls.”

Three Cats posted scores of two-over-par 74 in round three, all improving from round two.  Senior Cassandra Kirkland shaved five strokes off her round two score (79) and is tied with fellow Cat Adriana Zwanck for 37th place with a tournament score of 226 (+10) heading into the fourth and final round.

Duke posted a low-round score of 287 (-1) in the third round and takes a 13-stroke lead into the final round tomorrow.  The Blue Devils are aiming for back-to-back national championships.

Leading the field individually for the third consecutive day is Pepperdine junior Eileen Vargas, posting her first score over-par for the tournament 75 (+2) today.  Vargas sits atop the individual leader bored with a two-under-par 214, three strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second place.

Also competing for Arizona was freshman Sommer Scholl, carding a 74 (+2) in round three, eight strokes better than in round two.  Scholl heads into the final round in a tie for 44th place.

Fellow classmate Amanda Wilson has posted a combined score of 21-over-par 237 with one round still to play, while junior Rachel Gavin sits in 124th place with a 250 (+34).

“With another solid round tomorrow, we feel like we can climb into the top 10,” explained Allen.  “I think if we leave here with three solid rounds out of four, that’s something we can live with.”

The 2006 NCAA National Championships, held at the Ohio State Scarlet Golf Club, will conclude after the fourth and final round tomorrow.
