Arizona’s No. 9 women’s swimming team concluded the 2012 Pac-12 Championships on Saturday with three runner-up finishes and five additional finishes in the top five.
Sophomores Sarah Denninghoff (Tucson, Ariz.) and Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) and the 400 freestyle relay team all earned second-place finishes, while senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Ainsley Oliver (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), juniors Lauren Smart (Charlotte, N.C.) and Chelsey Salli (Vancouver, B.C.) and sophomore Aubrey Peacock (Jacksonville, Fla.) all finished in the top five in their respective events.
Denninghoff and Geer both earned runner-up honors in the 200 back and 100 free respectively, but also swam on the 400 free relay that finished in second, joined by sophomores Kait Flederbach (Carmel, Ind.) and Grace Finnegan (Columbus, Ohio).
Smart and Peacock finished third and fourth in the 200 back, Salli finished fourth in the 200 breast, Anderson finished fifth in the 200 fly and Oliver fourth on the platform.
“I am so proud of what this team did in this meet, but I believe our best is yet to come,” Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. “We also had a great performance by our diving team and for Ben (Grado) to come out and sweep all three boards was really special.”
The women will have a couple of weeks off before their biggest tournament of the season. The 2012 NCAA Championships will take place Thursday, March 15 through Saturday, March 17 in Auburn, Ala.
The divers will compete in the NCAA Zone E Championships the week before, beginning Thursday, March 8 and continuing through Saturday, March 10 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Arizona’s No.1-ranked men’s swimming team will compete in Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles beginning Wednesday, Feb. 29 and continuing through Saturday, March 3.
