RENO, Nev. – After righting the ship last night against Nevada, No. 24 Arizona kept the set winning streak intact, besting in-state foe Northern Arizona in straight sets 25-15, 26-24, 25-16 to improve to 7-2 overall on the season.
The trio of Tiffany Owens, Whitney Dosty and Cursty Jackson led the way for Arizona as the team recorded a hitting percentage of .343. Dosty led all scorers with 16 points by way of 14 kills and four block assists. Owens had 15 kills for the team-high and eight digs.
Arizona went on a 7-2 run to begin the match and another 11-4 run to effectively take the first set over the Lumberjacks. Arizona out-hit NAU .462 to .156 over the first set of play.
The second set was decidedly much closer with UA attempting to pull away mid-way through the set only to see the Lumberjacks close the gap and tie things at 16 apiece. Both teams would trade points down the stretch, but it was the Wildcats who would eventually win the set when Dosty took an assist from Weber and scored the winning point.
Up 2-0 in the match, Arizona made sure there wasn’t any rally attempts from its neighbor to the north. The Cats used a mini 4-0 run to set the pace early and establish an insurmountable lead. A 6-1 run by UA would put the match out of reach and give the team its second consecutive victory.
The Wildcats return home next weekend to host the Arizona Invitational presented by Lodge on the Desert. Other teams at McKale Center next week include Pepperdine, New Mexico State and Texas State.
