TEMPE, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s volleyball team (13-17, 4-14 Pac-10) fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils (15-14, 7-11 Pac-10) in a three-game sweep on Friday night before 1,607 fans at Wells Fargo Arena, bringing the Wildcats’ season to a close. Game scores were 30-23, 30-21, and 30-24.
The Sun Devils out-hit the Wildcats .208 to .079, as UA registered 36 kills on 140 swings with 25 errors. Sophomore Randy Goodenough led Arizona with 10 kills, and sophomore Brooke Buringrud added nine kills. Arizona finished the match with eight team blocks to the Sun Devils’ five.
Senior Stephanie Butkus finished the match with 31 assists, enough to push her into second place in program history. Her 4,035 assists are second only to former Wildcat and current assistant coach Dana Burkholder.
Arizona State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game, and then extended the margin to 10-3. The Wildcats battled to cut the deficit to 18-14, before the Sun Devils won the next three points, forcing UA to call a timeout trailing 21-14. The Wildcats were unable to cut into the seven point margin the rest of the way, eventually falling 30-23.
The two teams traded points early in the second game. With the score tied at six, Arizona State ran off five consecutive points to take an 11-6 advantage, before extending the lead further to 22-11. The Wildcats were unable to mount a rally and dropped the game by a score of 30-21.
In the third game, Arizona State broke a tie at four apiece, with a 5-1 run to lead 10-5. After battling back and forth to a score of 15-10, the Wildcats asserted themselves, posting a 5-0 run to tie the game at 15-15. The Sun Devils, however, won the next five points to take control of the deciding game, prevailing 30-24.
