WAHIAWA, Hawaii - The University of Arizona men's golf team posted an 11-over par total of 299 Monday and stands in 14th place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate.
Arizona's 299 team total Monday was its second highest round this season. The effort places the Wildcats in 14th position in the 20-team field, 25 strokes behind first round leader San Diego State at 274 (-14). The Aztecs were one of just two teams in the field to post a sub-par round on Monday. New Mexico is second at 287 (-1), while tournament-host Hawaii and Auburn are tied for third at 288 (E).
Individually, Arizona was led by freshman Kipp Riehle, who tallied a one-over 73 and is tied for 24th place in the 106-player field. Chris Nallen and Reid Hatley are among a group of nine golfers tied for 45th place at 75 (+3). Ricky Barnes is one stroke behind in a tie for 54th place. Rounding out the Wildcat five is Brian Woolf, who stands tied for 93rd place at 81 (+9).
The 54-hole tournament continues through Wednesday at the Leleihua Golf Course, a par 72, 6,917-yard facility.
