TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcats No. 20 men's and No. 3 women's track and field teams completed the combined events portion of the Jim Click Shootout on Friday afternoon. The meet is being held at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Junior Steven Scarvelisopened the day with a time of 16.12 in the 110-meter hurdles, earning 719 points. Scarvelis posted a personal-best mark of 116-11 (35.65m) in the discus competition. He added 577 points to his team total. His clearance of 13-1.5 (4.0m) was good for 617 points. Scarvelis threw 129-9 (39.56m) in the javelin, good for 436 points. He ran the 1,500-meter race in 4:34.07, adding 718 points to his total. He finished the meet in ninth place with 6,431 points.
Junior Keegan Cookeclocked a time of 15.67 in the 110-meter hurdles to start Friday's competition. That time was good for 770 points. Cooke fouled in all three attempts of the discus. Cooke set a personal-best mark in the pole vault, clearing 14-1.25 (4.30m) and earning 702 points. Cooke threw 188-6 (57.45m) in the javelin, good for 700 points and third place among the competitors. He did not run the 1,500-meter race. The winner, Patrick Arbour (unattached), totaled 7,593 points.
Competition will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. for the field events and 12:30 p.m. for the running events. Saturday's meet will be scored using championship scoring (10-8-6-4-2-1) and the relays are scored (10-8-6-4-2-1) in the same fashion. There will be a men's team champion and a women's team champion, instead of a conference champion. If any team has athletes that are competing the in the combined events, they will be scored and factored into the final score of the competition.
