TUCSON--UA All-American Jennie Finch struck out 11 and pitched her third shutout of the year to help lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame in Friday night action at the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic.
Finch won her 46th consecutive game, four shy of the NCAA record of 50 by Rebecca Aase of Florida State from 1991 to 1993. Arizona won its 49th consecutive game in Hillenbrand Stadium.
The game was No. 14-ranked Notre Dame's season opener.
The Cats scored their first runs in the second but missed out on a bigger opportunity. Lovie Jung walked, Courtney Fossatti singled and Mackenzie Vandergeest singled to drive in Jung. Leneah Manuma singled to load the bases.
An out later, Jenny Gladding drew a walk off Notre Dame's Steffany Stenglein to force in a run. Jackie Coburn hit a fly ball to left that would have scored Vandergeest from third on a tag up, but Notre Dame fielder Megan Ciolli threw Manuma out at third for a double play.
UA loaded the bases for the third time in the bottom of the fourth. Irish
reliever Carrie Wisen hit Manuma with a pitch to force in one run, but
Wisen struck out Jennie Finch to strand three more runners.
