TUCSON - The No. 59 ranked Arizona Women's tennis team has kept their home winning streak alive with a 6-1 win over No. 48 Rice University. The Cats battled strong winds and worthy competitors in a fierce match.

In doubles action, emotions ran high, with the Wildcats clinching two of the three matches. First to finish was the junior duo Natasha Marks and Sarah Landsman. After an early lead by Rice the Cats came back to win 9-7 over Rebekka Hanle and Ana Guzman. Next to finish was the team of Jane Huh and Susan Mc Rann on court three. After taking an early lead the Cats lost momentum and lost 8-6 to Jessica Jackson and Daniella Trigo. With the doubles point at stake the freshman team of Kim Stubbe and Lacey Smyth entered a tiebreaker. The duo defeated Dominique Harmath and Alex Rasch, 9-8 (7-5).

"The team competed very hard today under difficult weather conditions," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We came out strong in the doubles and got early leads on 2 and 3. At that point, however, we managed to make it hard on ourselves and let the Rice team back in. Fortunately, we were able to pull away at the end with wins at 1 and 2 which gave us a bit of a cushion going into the singles."

Feeding off of doubles momentum the Cats clinched five of six singles matches. First to finish was Smyth on court three. Smyth beat Jackson, 6-2, 6-4. Huh battled Kimberly Anicete in the No. 5 position. Huh lost the match 6-2, 6-4 for Arizona's only singles loss of the day. Marks was next to finish when she defeated Harmath 6-2, 7-5. In a close match against Guzman, Stubbe battled her way to the top for a 7-5, 7-5 win.

On court one Landsman was next to finish a back and forth battle against Hanle. After two close sets Landsman finished the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Last to finish was Mc Rann in the No. 6 position. Mc Rann quickly won her first set against Rasch , and after a long second set Mc Rann won the match 6-3, 7-5.

"Rice is a very talented team and we knew we were going to have to play hard for every match," Maes said. "Our girls did a great job and we certainly created some momentum going into next week's matches with Boise State and St Mary's."

The Cats move to 8-2 and maintain momentum moving into next weekend's matches. Arizona will take on the Broncos and the Gaels, both matches will be held in Boise, Idaho.
