The Wildcats defeated 69 ranked Rice University 4-3 on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. The game was decided by the final singles match of the day with freshman Sarah Landsman, defeating Rebecca Lin 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 position. Senior Danielle Steinberg continued with her win streak in singles with a win against Julie Chao 6-0, 6-2, and is now 4-0 in the spring season.
"We did really well in singles, and I'm especially proud of Jane because she hasn't played singles very often this year," Said head coach Vicky Maes, "I'm also proud of Sarah, who was the last one to play today, and her match decided the game for us. She did a great job in stepping up and getting that win."
In doubles, all three games went to Rice, with junior Claire Rietsch and Natasha Marks falling to Chao and Ana Guzman 8-7. Steinberg and Landsman lost to Jackson and Shiva-Shankar 8-4, and junior Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh lost to Rebecca Lin and Alex Rasch 8-3.
"We did not come out in doubles this weekend, losing the point two games in a row. It means that we're going to have to step up a lot in singles if we're going to win future matches." Said Maes.
Up next, the Wildcats continue their five game road trip in San Diego, California to take on San Diego State on Friday, February 20 at 2 p.m. PT. On Saturday the Wildcats will take on University of San Diego at noon PT.
