TUCSON--Drake took an early lead then hung on to beat New Mexico, 3-2, in Saturday morning softball action at Arizona's Worth Wildcat Invitational. Drake improved to 2-1 in the round-robin tournament while UNM dropped to 1-2. RBI singles by Brook Buchanan and Katie Wappler gave Drake a 2-0 lead in the first. Lauren Smith singled to score another in the second to make it 3-0.

The Lobos cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth with a leadoff double by Kelly Glass, a ground ball and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Shartzer. In the sixth, UNM's Elena Cranmer led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Ora Hensley and scored when Sabrina Sandberg's ground ball was mishandled at third base to make it 3-2.

Shartzer was hit by a pitch to lead off the UNM seventh against Katie Shimon, and moved to second on a wild pitch. But Shimon struck out Lobo slugger Iraina Ogas, struck out Ashley VanBoxmeer and got Cranmer on a grounder to short to end the game, earning a save.
