Box Score

EUGENE, Ore. (Oct. 25) - Despite scoring two goals early in the second half, the University of Arizona women's soccer team fell to Oregon, 3-2, in Eugene on Friday night. The Wildcats are now 5-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in Pac-10 play, while the Ducks move to 2-10-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference action. With the Cats' two goals tonight, they have set a new school record for single-season scoring, now with 31 goals.

Oregon out-shot Arizona, 4-2, in the first half, but the contest was still scoreless at the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, freshman forward Kelly Nelson (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair HS) broke the shutout with her 11th goal of the season, tying the school record for single-season scoring. The strike was assisted by junior midfielder Lindsey Greenwood (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS).

At 55:58, senior midfielder Naomi Chu (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) put the Cats ahead, 2-0, off a double-assist by freshmen Jennifer Klein (Prescott, Ariz. HS) and Althea Jones (Pickering, Ont., Can./St. Mary Catholic). The Cats' lead didn't last for long, however. In the 67th minute, Oregon's Sarah Denner sent a header into the back of the net, then teammate Arlene Tuttle tied the game just seven minutes later. In the 82nd minute, it was Tuttle who won the game for the Ducks, with her shot from 10 yards center.

The Ducks finished the match with an 11-6 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Natalie Juarez (Claremont, Calif. HS) had six saves for the Cats.

"We didn't bring our best game tonight," said head coach Cathy Klein. "Naomi Chu was, without a doubt, the best player out on that field tonight. She just played her heart out. Unfortunately, we just didn't bring our best stuff."

Arizona has now set a new school record for single-season scoring, with 31 goals. That breaks the old record of 30 set by the 1999 squad and tied by the 2001 team. Kelly Nelson is tied with Chrissy Sanford (1999) and Christine Keeley (1995) for the school record in single-season scoring, with 11 goals.

Arizona remains on the road this weekend, playing at Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 12 p.m. PST.
