Corvallis, Ore. ?- The 10th ranked University of Arizona women’s soccer team (14-5-0, 5-3-0) fell to Oregon State (9-9-1, 3-4-1) for its third loss of the Pac-10 season.
Neither team was able to register a goal in the first half, as Arizona goalkeeper freshman McCall Smith and Oregon State goalkeeper sophomore Melissa Onstad registered two saves each.
The game remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Oregon State freshman Monica Storm placed a pass from senior Janelle Joy into the back of the net. The Wildcats were unable to answer, giving the Beavers the 1-0 victory. Senior Candice Wilks led the Wildcat offense with four shots in the game, while junior Mallory Miller had the second most with two.
“We had a couple of good chances in the first half,” Head Coach Dan Tobias explained. “Oregon State is a strong team and we just weren’t able to put away what chances we got. We had two really good chances in the last couple minutes of the game and we couldn’t get the equalizer.”
“It was a good lesson for us about the Pac-10,” Tobias continued. “Every game is difficult and Oregon State did a good job of staying tight defensively and limiting our chances. They deserve the credit.”
The Wildcats travel to Eugene, Ore. to take on the Oregon Ducks in their final regular-season match at 1 p.m. (PST) on Sunday, Nov. 7. The Wildcats could still claim all, or a share, of the Pac-10 title with a win on Sunday, depending on the outcomes of other Pac-10 matches this weekend.
