TUCSON, Ariz. - Three University of Arizona swimmers were named to the 2011 World University Games roster in Shenzhen, China today as Cory Chitwood, Adam Small and Clark Burckle were selected by USA Swimming for competition. Arizona head coach Frank Busch has also been chosen to serve as head coach of the women's team during the summer event.

Known internationally as the Summer Universiade, the multi-sport event takes place every two years and is considered the second largest international competition behind the Olympic Games. It boasts competitors from around the world and is open to student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28 who are less than one year removed from college or its equivalent.

Chitwood, a seven-time collegiate All-American and current men's team captain, won an individual national championship in the 200 backstroke last year at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.  Last week, Chitwood, from Union, Ky., garnered Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month honors for December after recording three wins at the Texas Invitational.

Small, a junior freestyle sprinter and three-time All-American from Tempe, Ariz., leads the Arizona sprint contingent in 2010-11.  Working with associate head coach Rick DeMont, Small has transformed into one of the fastest sprinters in college swimming, specializing in relay events.

Burckle, a UA transfer last season from Florida who completed his college career in March by winning the 200 breaststroke for the Wildcats at the 2010 NCAA Championships, is a 2010-11 U.S. National Team member currently finishing up his degree in Tucson while also competing on USA Swimming Grand Prix circuit.  Last week at the Austin Grand Prix, Burckle finished second in the 200 breast event. Burckle also swam for the U.S. in the '09 World University Games held in Belgrade, Serbia.

In addition to Arizona's three representatives at the Summer Universiade, UA head coach Frank Busch has agreed to serve as the USA Women's team head coach while in Shenzhen, China.

Busch, currently in his 22nd season at the helm of Arizona swimming and diving, has held several previous international coaching positions including serving as an assistant coach for Team USA during the past two Olympic Games.  Most recently, Busch helped coach Team USA during the "Duel in the Pool" event in Manchester, England in December 2009.

In past years, the World University Games has been a breeding ground for some of the best swimming talent in the nation. Many Olympic swimmers have at one time been a member of a World University Games team. The 2007 U.S. World University Games Team saw three members all go on to compete in the 2008 Olympics.
