BERKELEY, Calif. -- Brigette Del Ponte knocked in seven runs on two homers to lead third-ranked Arizona to an 8-0 mercy win over No. 13 California in the first of a three-game series Friday.
The five-inning victory was UA's fourth straight over a Pac-10 opponent, tying a team record set in 1998 when the Wildcats swept doubleheaders with No. 25 Oregon and No. 22 Oregon State in the same weekend.
The Wildcats (39-7, 9-4 Pac-10) built a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out wild pitch that plated Brittany Lastrapes before the freshman Del Ponte lit up the scoreboard with a four-spot in the third.
Lastrapes and Lauren Schutzler led off the frame with singles and Stacie Chambers walked, then Del Ponte took the full count pitch over the fence for her fifth grand slam of the season to break the game open.
Two hits to leadoff the fifth paved the way for Arizona to get the run-rule margin on Del Ponte's second homer of the day and 19th on the season.
UA scattered ten hits, and Kenzie Fowler (28-5) limited the Cal offense to three base knocks, striking out eight.
The Bears dropped to 35-14 and 5-8 in league play. Jolene Henderson (15-8) took the loss.
The teams play tomorrow at 1 p.m.
