Arizona women’s basketball (12-15, 4-12) fell in a 59-58 thriller to rival Arizona State (13-15, 5-11) on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and posted seven assists after recording the first triple-double in Arizona women’s basketball history on Tuesday night.
As a team, the Wildcats outrebounded the Sun Devils, 36-34.
The Sun Devils came out strong in the first half, scoring the first six points and following up with short 4-0 and 6-0 runs. Barnes had 10 points, but the Wildcats were outrebounded by six and ASU took a 35-27 lead going into halftime.
Arizona was the team to come out strong in the second half, starting the half on a 7-2 run to narrow the score to within three, but the Sun Devils would not let up and maintained the lead. The Wildcats went on an 8-0 run to tie the score and take their first lead of the game, 49-50. The teams traded points until ASU tied the score at 56 with a minute left in the game.
In the final minute, Gloyd iced two free throws to put Arizona up, 58-56, but ASU’s Haley Videckis hit a three to give the Sun Devils a 59-58 advantage with 22 seconds left. The Widlcats could not score on the ultimate possession and ASU took the game, 59-58.
The Wildcats will close their regular season when they host USC and No. 16 UCLA next weekend. They will host the Trojans at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1 and the Bruins for senior day at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.
