Steinberg to Face TCU's Besovic in First Round

STANFORD, Calif ?- Arizona freshman Danielle Steinberg will make her debut at the NCAA Division I Singles Championships on Wednesday, May 24 against Helena Besovic of Texas Christian University. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. (PT) at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.

 

Sixty-four student athletes from 41 schools across the country will compete in the single elimination tournament. In the tournament, all matches will be the best of three sets, with regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games.

 

Steinberg, ranked No. 37 in the nation after the regular season, compiled a 14-6 record in her inaugural season as a Wildcat, with all six losses coming at the hands of ranked foes. The native of Tel-Aviv, Israel, is one of 17 Pac-10 singles players selected to compete in the 64-player tournament.

 

Steinberg’s opponent, Besovic, is currently ranked No. 28 in the nation. The native of Sarajevo, Bosnia, compiled a singles record of 30-8 on the season.

 

The winner of the match will advance to play on Thursday against the winner of New Mexico’s Maja Kovacek and Stanford’s Theresa Logar.
