NEW YORK--Arizona earned a No. 8 seed in the 2007 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships and will face No. 9 seed Purdue on Friday in New Orleans, as participants in the Midwest Region.
New Orleans also features the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament, Florida (29-5), which faces Jackson State (21-13) on Friday. The winner of that game plays the winner of the UA-Purdue game in the second round.
The UA-Purdue matchup is the first game of the evening session, scheduled for 6:20 p.m. (CDT). the Florida-Jackson State game follows.
Both Arizona (20-11) and Purdue (21-11) were at-large picks for the tourney. Like Arizona, the Boilers were knocked out of their conference tournament, in the latter case by eventual No. 1 seed Ohio State. Purdue tied for fourth in the Big Ten regular season with a 9-7 record. Arizona lost to Oregon in the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 tournament and Purdue lost to Ohio State in a Big Ten tournament semi-final.
Other teams playing in a pod at New Orleans Friday/Sunday but feeding into the South Regional include No. 2 Memphis (30-3) vs. No. 15 North Texas (23-10), and No. 7 seed Nevada (28-4) vs. No. 10 Creighton (22-10). Memphis meets UNT at 1130 am., with the Nevada-Creighton game 30 minutes after that first game ends.
Arizona is making its 23rd consecutive NCAA appearance and 26th overall. The 23 trips is the nation's longest active streak.
In the tournament, Arizona historically is 4-0 vs. No. 9 seeds -- including a victory over Wisconsin last year at Philadelphia -- and 2-4 in games played as the No. 8 seed.
