<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><STRONG><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on">PALO ALTO</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Calif.</st1:State> ? </STRONG>The Arizona softball team played Stanford to a scoreless tie for 12 innings on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Family Stadium, before the game was stopped due to the Wildcats' pending flight to return to Tucson<STRONG>.</STRONG></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><STRONG></STRONG> </P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The game has officially been declared a tie -- UA's first since 1986. With Pac-10 play winding down and final exams right around the corner, the contest will not be resumed or made up. All statistics from the contest will be counted.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"> </P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Both teams will continue conference action over the next two weekends. Arizona will face Oregon and Oregon State on the road next weekend, before returning to Hillenbrand Stadium to close out regular season play May 10-12.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Arizona</st1:State></st1:place> pitcher Taryne Mowatt pitched a gem, limiting Stanford to three hits, while striking out 13 Cardinal hitters in her third complete-game effort of the weekend.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The Wildcats delivered at least one hit per inning in six of the first seven frames, but had nothing to show for it except for seven runners left on base before extra innings started.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">In the first, Caitlin Lowe led off with a single and a stolen base, but the Wildcats could not drive her in.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">In the second, Laine Roth led off with the first of her two hits in the game.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Next, Callista Balko laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, but the home plate umpire ruled she struck the ball with a foot on home plate and declared Balko out.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Sam Banister followed by moving Roth over to second with a sac bunt. However, the Wildcats left another runner stranded.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">UA mounted a rally in the fourth, as Roth led off with a single to mark her sixth multi-hit game of the year.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Balko laid down another sac bunt, which Penna threw past Cardinal first baseman Erin Howe, placing runners on the corners with no outs.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>With Banister at the plate, UA head coach Mike Candrea called a suicide squeeze, which Penna fielded in time to cut down Roth en route to the plate.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Stanford, which recorded its first hit of the game in the third inning, gave UA a quick scare in its half of the fourth inning.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Cardinal right fielder Shannon Koplitz skied a ball to straight away center field, where Lowe reached over the fence to corral the ball for the first out of the inning.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">To begin the fifth, the Wildcats got the leadoff hitter on for the third time in the contest.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Adrienne Acton used a swinging bunt to reach with a single.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Lowe followed with a sharply hit ball that appeared to be good for a single to right, but the ball struck <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Acton</st1:place></st1:City>&rsquo;s foot ? rendering the Wildcat right fielder out and giving Lowe first base.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Mesa</st1:City></st1:place> and Fox completed the inning with a pair of grounders back to the circle, keeping the game at a 0-0 tie.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p> </o:p></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The Cardinal got its first leadoff hitter of the game on with a Koplitz walk to start the sixth.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Mowatt induced Michelle Smith into popping out in foul territory to Jenae Leles at third base.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>After allowing a walk, Mowatt struck out the next two Stanford hitters to retire the side.</P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"> </P> <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The run-scoring drought for the teams continued in extra frames, as zeroes filled the line score.
