Sept. 25, 2008
After finishing 10-1 in its non-conference schedule, the Arizona volleyball team opens Pac-10 play this weekend with a pair of games against the Washington schools.
The Wildcats open with Washington State Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m. in McKale and continue with No. Washington, Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
The Cougars (7-4) come into the match on a three-match win streak, looking to duplicate their 2006 performance in McKale when they beat the Wildcats 3-1. Arizona has won the last three meetings between the schools and was picked to finish ahead of Washington State in the coaches' preseason poll.
WSU features three players with more than 90 kills on the season and junior Kelly Hyder, who just became the school's all-time digs leader. Senior middle blocker Emily Rooney leads the team with 105 kills, followed closely by junior outside hitter Jackie Albright and senior outside hitter Brittany Johnson.
Washington (9-1) enters Saturday's match as a top-ten team and will be the first ranked opponent Arizona has faced in 2008. The Huskies have beaten Arizona in eight straight games, dating back to 2003.
No. 9 Washington's only lose this season was to No. 7 Hawaii on the road. The Huskies feature two players with 100 or more kills. Sophomore Kindra Carlson leads the team with 3.69 kills-per-set and junior Jill Collymore averages 3.42.
Following the matches with the Washington schools, the Wildcats have a quick turn around when they face in-state rival Arizona State Wednesday, Oct. 1 in McKale Center at 7:00 p.m.
