AUSTIN, Texas – Head coach Eric Hansen and the Arizona swimming team head to Austin, Texas for the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships, taking place Thursday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
For the swimmers, the event serves as a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships that will take place in March. The Wildcats have 42 current swimmers competing in the event including several alums. In addition, 19 U.S. Olympians will compete in the competition.
The Arizona women enter the event ranked No. 13 in the most recent CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Coaches poll, while the men are also ranked No. 13.
The men are led by Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle), Mitchell Friedemann (100 back) and Carl Mickelson (100 breast, 200 breast), with each owning a top-10 time in their respective events in NCAA competition so far this season. The 400 medley relay team of Friedemann, Mickelson, Shapira Bar-Or and Giles Smith have the second best time in the nation, while the 200 medley relay team of Friedemann, Smith, Kevin Cordes, and Tommy Gutman own the third best time in the country.
The Wildcat women are led by Margo Geer (50 free, 100 free, 200 free), who owns top-10 times nationally in three different events including the third fastest time in the 100 free. The 400 medley relay team that features Geer, Lauren Smart, Megan Lafferty and Ellyn Baumgardner own the fourth fastest time in the NCAA so far this season, with a time of 3:36.96.
Last season, Arizona had 11 individuals qualify for 17 events and five relay teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, while at Texas.

Competition will begin on Thursday, with preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
