Post-Game Quotes

Red & Blue Game

Nov. 1, 2005

Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “Considering the start, it was tough. What happened before the game carried over into the game. We needed to play through it and play tough. I know that things are hard but we have to play through it.”

“We have to do a much better job utilizing post players.”

“Amina (Njonkou) is a good player. She will be better in the next game. Right now she puts it on the floor too much.”

“I knew going against the guys was going to be physical.”

On her team’s style of play for the season:

“We are going to be pressing a lot. I’m going to play a lot of people because of the style of play.”

On preseason play:

“We are going to play people who are good and play a similar style to ours.”

On tomorrow’s Pac-10 Media Day:

“I think for Natalie and I, we have been grieving since it happened. For the fans and media, this is the first time without Polkey and it makes it real for them. Still in some ways it is hard to believe. This team will do well because they are strong and believe in themselves.”

On replacing Polkey’s leadership in the locker room:

“They are going to have to do it in a different way.”

Senior guard Natalie Jones:

On her shooting tonight:

“Personally, it gets really frustrating when I’m not hitting shots.”

On Polkey:

“I didn’t think it would really hit me this hard tonight, because we have been practicing and stuff without her for a while. But she was always the one to get us ready for each game and that hit us hard before the game and at halftime. But everyone kept together, no one tried to take her role.”

On playing against guys:

“They are more physical with us. The coaches tell them to play hard against us so we will be ready for Pac-10.”

Sophomore guard Ashley Whisonant:

“We have a lot to work on; we need brighten things up and have our freshman step up.”

On her first time being a point guard:

“I feel I did pretty good. I still have a lot to learn. I have been learning a lot in the classroom.”

On turnovers:

“I personally need to cut down on my turnovers. I had seven this game and I definitely need to cut that down and handle the ball better.”

Junior guard Joy Hollingsworth:

On the difference between first half and second half:

“I think first half we had jitters. It was also hard because it was the first time we played without Polkey.”

On playing against the men on the practice team:

“If you can play against them, then you can play against anyone. They play tough, but that’s good practice for us.”
