            Senior guard one of 30 in contention for player-of-the-year award

 

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona men’s basketball player Hassan Adams was named a midseseason candidate for the Naismith Trophy, presented by Cingular Wireless, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced this week.

 

The Wildcat senior is included among a list of 30 student-athletes who are under consideration for the 2006 Naismith Trophy, which is given annually to college basketball’s player of the year.

 

Adams, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior guard from Los Angeles, is averaging 18.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 24 games this season.  Adams is also averaging a Pac-10-leading 2.7 assists per game while shooting 47.8 percent (187-of-391) from the field.  He’s scored in double figures 22 times this season, including 11 20-point games.  Adams has twice earned Pac-10 Player-of-the-Week honors in 2005-06.

 

First presented in 1969, the Naismith Trophy is one of the most prestigious honors in college basketball.  The four-player final ballot will be announced in March.  The 2006 Naismith Trophy winner will be announced at the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.
