TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s tennis team (3-6) won their second straight match at home on Saturday, defeating UNLV (3-6) 4-3. In their last match against Stanford, Arizona split singles points with the Cardinals, but lost the duel since Stanford won the remaining doubles point. It was the second time this season that Arizona lost a match decided by the doubles point. In an attempt to change their fortunes, the Wildcats opted to revamp their doubles teams. The strategy paid off against UNLV as Arizona was able to capture the doubles point for the first time in their last six outings.

Jason Labrosse and Peter Zimmer paired up to take down UNLV’s David Campbell and Lucas Barleacht 8-3 at the No. 2 spot, while Arizona’s Bruno Alcala and Milos Romic took care of Jonathan Hooper and Slavio Bijelica 8-4. The other new doubles combination was comprised of junior Claudio Christen and freshman Ravid Hezi.

In singles, the two teams split matches. At the No. 1 spot, UNLV’s Elliot Wronski used his strong forehand to dictate points in a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Christen. Arizona’s Alcala fought back from down a break in both sets to reach five-all twice, but was eventually ousted by Brett Hunter 7-6(5), 7-5. Hezi turned in his most impressive performance of the year in a straight set victory over David Campbell. Hezi is looking more and more comfortable in an Arizona uniform every match and attributes confidence to his recent success. “It was a lot of pressure at the beginning of the year to immediately jump in at the No. 2 spot and perform. I’m more comfortable at this point at No. 3, and whenever I can get a point for the team I’m happy,” commented Hezi. After freshman Alex Labrosse’s victory at No. 6, Zimmer clinched the match for Arizona with a three-set victory over Jonathan Hooper at the No. 4 slot.

Next weekend, the Wildcats will be in action at home again as they take on the Memphis Tiger’s (3-5). The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (MST) and will take place at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
