Women's Golf in Third After First Day of NCAA Fall Preview Friday

OPELIKA, Ala. - The 2003-04 Arizona women's golf team opened up the season Friday morning at the NCAA Fall Preview, which is being contested over a par-72 layout. Arizona took to the Grand National Lake Course, and the Wildcats stand in third place after shooting 1-over-par 289 in the first round. Sophomore Cassandra Kirkland led the Wildcats, as she ended the day tied for second place at 4-under-par 68.

Atop the leader board is the tournament host, Auburn, stroking a 2-under-par 286. The Tigers lead the Wildcats by three strokes. Duke is in second after the first round, with a score of 1-under par 287. Vanderbilt and Pepperdine round out the top five, as the two schools are tied for fourth place, both shooting 7-over-par 295.

On the individual leader board, Duke's Brittany Lang leads the pack after one day, shooting 5-under-par 67. Kirkland is tied for second with Auburn's Nicole Hage entering the second round.

Wildcat sensation Erica Blasberg is tied with four other golfers in seventh at 1-under-par 71. Sophomore transfer Lani Elston is tied for 21st after shooting 2-over-par 74. Sophomore Whitney Welch and junior Mar Garcia are tied for 40th and 46th, respectively. Welch carded a 76 (4-over-par), and Garcia shot a 77 (5-over-par).

The Wildcats are set to tee off Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8:45 a.m. EST. The tournament runs through Sunday, with the final round set to begin at 8:45 a.m. EST.
