TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez announced this week that 14 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the school and play baseball beginning in the 2012-13 academic calendar.

"I am thrilled to have a recruiting class of this caliber," Lopez said. "This is a very talented group of baseball players, but beyond that they are an outstanding group of young men. I am excited to coach them and have them a part of our program in the future."

Arizona's recruiting efforts focused on highly talented players from in-state and across the nation. Of the 14 players signed, three are from Arizona, six from California, two from Illinois and one each from Texas, Utah and Washington. The Wildcats' signed nine pitching prospects in the class, including two that also could play other positions. The signees also include three infielders and two outfielders.

"This is a balanced group of players when you look at what we have this season on our team and what we will potentially have to replace next season," Lopez said. "We have a strong junior class this year that may not be back next season. But, between this recruiting class and the one that is here this fall as freshmen, I feel very good about the future of our program."

The Wildcats, who have won 73 games and have two postseason appearances in the last two seasons, return five regular position starters and two starting pitchers.

Arizona's 2012 recruiting class, which includes the 17 players enrolled this fall, was ranked No. 18 in the nation by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

The 2012 season begins on Feb. 17-19 when Arizona hosts North Dakota State for the start of a three-game series. The Wildcats then play Utah Valley in a single game on Feb. 21, before the Auburn Tigers come to Tucson for three games over two days on Feb. 24-24.
